What "deprecated" actually means

Providers use the word consistently enough to rely on: a deprecated model is one they have announced they will stop serving. It keeps working in the meantime — usually for months — and then it does not.

Two dates matter, and they are not the same one. The deprecation date is when the provider announced the model is on its way out. The shutdown date (also called retirement or sunset) is when requests start failing. We record both, separately, and always show you the one that carries a deadline.

Some providers announce the first without committing to the second. Where that is the case we say so rather than guessing at a date — see the methodology for how we handle incomplete announcements.
